Smithwick's is Ireland's oldest operating brewery, founded in 1710 by John Smithwick in Kilkenny, Ireland on the site of a Franciscan abbey that had been brewing since the 14th century. Their Red Ale is a classic Irish red, characterized by a deep amber color, a smooth, slightly sweet malt character with caramel notes, and a gentle hop bitterness. Smithwick's was acquired by Guinness (now Diageo) in 1965 and brewing shifted to Dublin, but the brand retains its Kilkenny identity. Smithwick's Red Ale is beloved in Ireland and among diaspora communities worldwide as a genuine taste of Irish brewing heritage.
